The Stanford Band, suspended in December for alcohol policy violations and other infractions that came on top of previous disciplinary problems, was given provisional status in January to resume operations after a review of the case by outgoing provost John Etchemendy. Based on reform proposals from the Band, including a new management structure and monitoring of that process, Etchemendy gave permission for activities such as rehearsals and Dollie and Tree selections. The return of performances at home athletic events could happen before the end of the winter quarter, assuming approval by an oversight committee.

In a statement, the Band thanked “students, faculty, alumni, friends, administrators, and others” for their support and said more than 280 letters to university officials from the Stanford community showed a “love for the Band” and was “a constant reminder of the importance of our appeal.”
