Tresidder Facelift

University wags have long joked that campus architects took their cues from Taco Bell. So it is only fitting that, starting this fall, you'll be able to get good Mexican food on campus. Pollo Rey, a fast-food chain, will be offering burritos, rotisserie chicken and a a taco bar in a special Tressider Union outlet. The restaurant, which plans to open in time for the first day of classes, will occupy an L-shaped section where a dry cleaner and T-shirt shop had been located. It promises late hours, live music, a big-screen TV, and a "heart-smart" menu.

The arrival of Pollo Rey is part of a long-overdue facelift for Tresidder. The main dining area will get more comfortable seating, new lighting and some potted plants. The dry cleaner will close, the barber shop will move, and the Coffeee House will get a makeover. Also coming: a juice vendor, specializing in the latest beverage craze, smooothies. "It's really almost a cult thing at Stanford," says Dean of Students Mark Wais, who's been barraged with student requests. The idea, he says, is to make Tresidder a more attractive place to study and hang out--and to push it toward economic self-sufficiency.
